Phillip Lim launched his label in 2004, and, in less than three years, 3.1 Phillip Lim became a strong brand. The pure, clean lines, remembering of classic American sportswear made it stand out from other new labels, a little too arty. Lim started as a design assistant at Katayone Adeli, after which he followed up with Development in his native Orange County, California. He named his signature collection 3.1, as he was 31 when he made it on his own. Just one year after his solo debut Phillip Lim received his first CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund nomination.
